Picture
Dr. Heather Lynch is a quantitative ecologist and a Professor at Stony Brook University with a joint appointment in the Department of Ecology & Evolution and the Institute for Advanced Computational Science. Lynch was recently named the inaugural Director of Stony Brook’s new Collaborative for the Earth. Lynch’s research is dedicated to understanding the population dynamics of Antarctic wildlife, and she has spent nearly two decades leading survey teams in the Antarctic mapping the distribution and abundance of Antarctic penguins. Lynch has helped pioneer the use of satellite imagery for studying the distribution and abundance of Antarctic seabirds and has published the first Antarctic-wide satellite-based surveys of both Adélie penguins and Antarctic petrels. Lynch received an NSF CAREER Award for her work on the spatial dynamics of Antarctic penguins and was elected an early career fellow of the Ecological Society of America. She is a National Geographic Explorer, a former AAAS Fellow for Science Engagement, a Pew Fellow for Marine Conservation, and the first ecologist to receive the Blavatnik National Medal for Life Sciences. Lynch has an A.B. in Physics from Princeton University, an M.A. in Physics from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University.
