New Jersey Science Convention

Bringing 21st Century Science Skills to the Classroom
2022: Helping All Students Find Their Voice
October 18 & 19, 2022
at the Princeton Marriott Forrestal

NJSC: Celebrating 46 Years of Service to Science Education
On behalf of the New Jersey Science Convention Steering Committee, we welcome you to the 46th Annual science convention. The convention has a history of providing science teachers in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania with professional development over the course of two days. Our goal is to provide a variety of sessions over two days addressing K-12 three dimensional/NGSS lessons in all science areas, and those demonstrating methods of creating culturally responsive science classrooms that promote equity and inclusion, engage students in climate change through research, discourse, and problem solving and include the explanation and exploration of local problems.

Please join us for one or two days at the NJ Science Convention and for our Tuesday night banquet. This year we are pleased to present as our banquet speaker Dr. John Wilkin from the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.  “Dr. Wilkin is a member of NASA’s Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OSTST) and is active in promoting uses of radar altimetry in the coastal ocean. He represents OSTST on the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) Science Team (GOVST). Wilkin also co-chairs the User Working Group for NASA’s Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO-DAAC), and is a member of the Ocean Observing panel for Physics and Climate (OOPC) of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).” https://marine.rutgers.edu/team/john-wilkin/ In alignment with our 2022 theme, Dr. Wilken will share his presentation on the future of coastal ocean environmental forecasting.

If you are looking for new classroom ideas and strategies or if you are willing to share your successes with colleagues join us and catch the energy of the New Jersey Science Convention.

Science Goes to the Movies: Exploring Themes and Techniques for a Variety of Curricula

Science fiction movies provide a great “hook” for teaching science and the socio-political matrices in which they are created. We'll explore themes as well as the science and art behind Hollywood special effects.

Session 123 | Wednesday 10:00-11:30 | in Carnahan

Samatha Ramaswamy, PSTA President | NJSC 2021 Invited Presenter | Long-term Lessons from Pandemic Teaching: Making Positive Changes Stick

SESSION CANCELED

Long-term Lessons from Pandemic Teaching: Making Positive Changes Stick

This session will explore different technologies and strategies (Flipgrid, Pear Deck, and digital card sorts) used during remote and hybrid instruction and how they can be adapted for in-person instruction.

New Jersey Science Convention 2020 Announcement

7/16/2020

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of the future post pandemic environment the New Jersey Science Convention is announcing today that the in-person 2020 – Science: The Key to the Future scheduled to take place October 20 & 21, 2020 at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal has been cancelled.

This was not an easy decision for the Steering Committee. However, after careful consideration of all the challenges presented by COVID-19 and the health and safety risk to our attendees, exhibitors, speakers, volunteers and staff the committee unanimously decided that it is impossible and irresponsible to hold our event as scheduled.

There are many stakeholders involved in making New Jersey Science Convention a successful event each year. Members of the Steering Committee, volunteers, attendees, presenters, exhibitors, and sponsors have provided continuous support over the years. Our partners at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal have offered their cooperation with and mutual understanding of the COVID-19-related factors beyond our control that led to this decision. Their efforts and support have served New Jersey Science teachers over 43 years.

The Steering Committee is definitely looking forward to a return to a time when we can resume a face-to-face event.  However, we recognize the need for change in 2020. We have begun to explore virtual learning as an exciting way to continue our mission of providing science professional development to New Jersey K-12 teachers of science. This will be different from the traditional two-day in person convention but for the current environment it will better serve the health and safety all our stakeholders.

In the coming weeks, we will be providing additional details about the new convention experience for 2020. We hope that you will be part of NJSC 2020 either as a presenter or a sponsor. As the saying goes…Stay tuned.

Dr. Jeff Goldstein | NJSC 2020 Banquet Speaker & Invited Presenter

Human Exploration:
It’s Not a Book of Knowledge...It's a Journey
Every parent remembers that magical time when our children first began to speak, that moment marking the beginning of an unending stream of questions.  In our children we can see our humanity—our innate curiosity—and recognize the obvious…that we are born to explore!

Science and more generally STEM, in all its seeming complexity, is nothing but a means to organize curiosity. A way to empower one’s self to ask the gift of a question, and to hone the art that allows navigation through the noise of the universe around us in quest of an answer.  It is an emotional, joyful, and wondrous journey that hopefully allows the traveler to pull back the veil of nature just a little, see how she operates, and celebrate the accomplishment.

STEM education is no different. It is the means by which we immerse our children in the act of journey by letting them do science, and acknowledging it is their journey.  As teachers, our sweet reward is seeing the joys of learning wash over them.  And as teachers, we are charged with nothing less than patiently and gently launching the explorations of an entire generation.

What you don’t know is a gift…because you can ask a question and start a journey.
